I'm still kicking myself for this one. A crested serpent-eagle 大冠鷲 came really close to us just when we were getting ready to leave, and I only managed to get my camera up for the flying away shots. Moral of the story: ALWAYS have your camera out!
I've had that happen too many times. This is why I also even keep my camera pointed at my feeders while I work. It rewarded me with one photo that everyone thinks is fake (the one with four male birds at my feeders) and a great photo of a Hoary Redpoll, which is a rare bird to find among Common Redpolls So yes, always have the camera READY!
Yeah, it happened to me twice in one day - the other bird I could have photographed was the Philippine spine-tailed swift - an extremely rare vagrant in Taiwan, endangered, AND 15 feet away from us. Just thinking about it makes me sad all over again
To make you feel better, I'm inclined to show you my most disappointing shot ever. Every time I look at it or think about it, I just get sad. If I were ready sooner, I could have actually focused. [link]
